Changes to Gluten Free prescribing for adults

Changes to Gluten Free prescribing for adults
03 November 2017

Following a 6 week public consultation, NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group’s Governing Body has approved a decision to change GP prescribing guidelines for Gluten Free foods for adults in Sheffield.

Thank you to everybody who took the time to share their views on the proposals. The full consultation report and all responses can be found here.

The feedback provided us with important information which was carefully considered during the discussion and decision making. A copy of the CCG proposals that includes consideration of the issues raised in the consultation can be found here.

GPs will now be asked to suspend prescribing manufactured Gluten Free foods to adults (over the age of 18). Prescribing GPs will however be able to apply discretion in exceptional circumstances where they are sufficiently convinced that there is a genuine risk that a vulnerable individual is, or will become, undernourished if they do not prescribe gluten free products.

The impact of the change will be monitored and reviewed in 12 months time.

CCG Chair and Sheffield GP Dr Tim Moorhead said: "This has been a very difficult decision to make in the face of significant financial challenge. There was a great deal of heartfelt debate at our meeting and discussion around the views we heard from consultation feedback. However, it is important to note that these are guidelines for GPs - they will always prescribe according to their clinical judgement, for example where they feel there is risk to a vulnerable individual. It is also very important that we understand any impact of the change, which will be monitored and reported back to us."
