Sheffield United show their support this Breast Cancer Awareness Month
03 October 2016

This October, The Blades are asking their male supporters to look after the women in their lives and make sure their mums, wives, partners, sisters, aunties, daughters and friends take up their invite and attend their three yearly screening appointments.

Billy Sharp, Striker said: “We are proud to be supporting the campaign, raising awareness of breast screening amongst our supporters.

“It is always the ladies in our lives looking after us and this is an opportunity for us to remind the ladies about the importance of attending screening and to make sure they are taking up their invite.”

On Saturday 29 October , The Blades home match against MKDons, the team will be warming up in campaign t-shirts displaying key messages ‘Breast screening saves lives’ and ‘Join the fight take up your invite’ as a reminder to fans of the important role screening plays in the detection of breast cancer.

Dave McCarthy, Operations Director at Sheffield United, said: "We are a community focused club; we do everything we possibly can to look after the health and wellbeing of our supporters and members of the club and want to encourage women to attend their screening appointments.

“I urge all women in Sheffield to join the fight and take up their breast screening invitations.”

Approximately one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Early detection through screening offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery.

Joanne Lay, Superintendent Radiographer at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are grateful to the club for helping us raise awareness amongst the Sheffield community and promote the importance of attending breast screening appointments. Screening can pick up abnormalities that women might not be able to feel themselves during their own regular breast checks.

“Women who have missed or need to rebook an appointment can contact us on 0114 271 1920.”

Breast cancer screening is currently available every three years to women aged 50 to 70 years with some women being called up from the age of 47.

Early detection offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery. Join the fight and take up your invite. Missed your appointment or need more information, call Sheffield breast screening clinic on 0114 271 1920.
