Stay Well This Winter roadshow comes to Sheffield this November

Stay Well This Winter roadshow comes to Sheffield this November
09 November 2016

The Stay Well This Winter roadshow will visit Sheffield on the 14th & 15th November to give local people advice and tips on looking after their health this winter.

The roadshow will be stopping in Sheffield at Hillsborough shopping centre and is part of the Stay Well This Winter campaign, a joint initiative from NHS England and Public Health England, to help the public, and in particular those with long-term conditions and older people, prepare for winter and ward off common winter illnesses so they do not require a visit to the hospital.

At the event, leaflets will be distributed that provide information on how you and your family can stay well this winter. A nurse will also be on hand to talk to anyone who has any questions.

Dr Zak McMurray, Sheffield GP and Medical Director for NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Being prepared is a key element in helping you to stay well, especially during the winter months. Winter can be bad for our health, particularly for older people or those with long term health conditions, but there a number of things you can do to keep you and your family well this winter.

“If you suffer from a long term health condition, are aged 65 or over, or are pregnant, get the free flu vaccine now. It’s free because you need it.

“Children aged 2 -7 can also get the free flu vaccine so if you are a parent please make sure you child gets it. This year it is a nasal spray vaccination. Children aged 2, 3 and 4 can get it from their GP and those in school years 1, 2 and 3 can receive it at school but need parental permission.

“It is also important to keep warm in winter – both inside and outdoors. Heat your home to at least 18°C, as this may help prevent colds, flu or more serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia.

“And if you do feel unwell, pharmacists are a great place to start for medical advice. The sooner you get advice the better – pharmacists are here to help you stay well this winter.”
