Day 4: Diabetes Prevention Programme

Preventing the risk of diabetes

Over 1500 Sheffield people have been referred to NHS England’s National Diabetes Prevention Programme (called ‘Better You’), helping them make lifestyle, dietary and activity changes to live healthier lives and avoid developing type 2 diabetes.

It’s believed that up to 15,000 people in the city are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and the prevention programme aims to help as many of these people as possible to avoid developing the condition by changing their lifestyles.

Ceri James, NHS Sheffield CCG Commissioning Manager said: “People who are referred to the Diabetes Prevention Programme by their GP receive tailored, personalised support. This support includes help to lose weight, education on healthy eating and lifestyle and bespoke physical exercise programmes.

"By taking this kind of action, we hope we will reduce people’s risk of, or even stop them from, developing type 2 Diabetes.”

Programmes are available in a range of locations across the city. For more information, please visit the website.

Diabetes Transformational Funding - £1.5m secured

Sheffield successfully bid for and received £1.5M of NHS England funding to help deliver better outcomes for diabetes patients in four clinical areas. The funding is being used this year and next to increase the capacity and therefore the quality and coverage of care in both community and hospital settings.

Ceri James commented: “This is a considerable investment in diabetes services that will allow more people to receive better care for their diabetes, improving outcomes and reducing costs to the system through improved treatment.”
