NHS Sheffield CCG Launch New App

NHS Sheffield CCG Launch New App
28 February 2014

A new mobile phone app is now available to help people living and working in Sheffield find information about local NHS services.

NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has launched the ‘NHS Sheffield Service Finder’ FREE app which will help people choose the best service for their illness or injury. It will explain what each NHS service does, when it should be used and uses location settings to pinpoint the nearest service.

It is hoped that this innovation will show people that there are many different places that they can get healthcare in Sheffield when they are unwell to make sure they get the right treatment in the right place, allowing busy NHS services such as accident and emergency to help the people who need them most.

The app also advises people about how to look after themselves at home if they have a minor illness or injury and what to keep in their medicine cabinet. There is also advice on first aid, healthy living and a section for recording notes, setting appointment reminders and links to other useful services.

Rachel Gillott, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “This new handy app gives people all the information they need to find the right local NHS service at the touch of a button.

“By making informed decisions about choosing the right health services it means that NHS services are used appropriately, for example, our accident and emergency service can devote their time to helping those with life-threatening and emergency conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes and serious injuries whilst other services deal with patients who have less serious illness.

“People will also find that if they choose the best service for their illness or injury, it could mean that they wait less time to receive care.”

The available options highlighted in the app advise people when to:

•           Self care – how to look after yourself at home with a well-stocked medicine cabinet

•           Visit a Pharmacist (chemist) – for expert advice on common illnesses and the best medicines to treat them

•           Call 111 – if you need urgent healthcare, contact NHS 111 which will help you access the local service that can help you best

•           Arrange to visit a GP (Doctor) – for illnesses that just won’t go away, arrange to see your doctor

•           Go to the Walk-In Centre – for when you cannot get to see your GP and it’s not getting any better

•           Attend A&E or call 999 – only if you need very urgent medical attention.

The FREE app is available for IPhone https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nhs-sheffield-service-finder/id816108692?mt=8 and Android devices https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.myoxygen.servicefinder.sheffield&hl=en_GB
