The Sheffield Macmillan Unit for Palliative Care opened in 2002 and provides 18 palliative care inpatient beds on the site of the Northern General Hospital. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the unit.

The Unit offers 6 single rooms and 4 three-bedded bays, and each of these rooms open on to a garden and wooded area on the southern edge of the hospital site.

The unit team includes nursing, medical, social work, pharmacy and therapy staff. Complementary therapies are provided in partnership with the Cavendish Centre

The Palliative Care Unit complements the 20 palliative care beds provided by St. Luke’s Hospice.

The unit offers admission to people with palliative care needs in line with the citywide referral criteria.  The average length of stay at the unit is about two weeks. Unfortunately, the unit is unable to offer long term care or planned respite care.

Referrals may be made by health professionals, with the consent of the person’s GP (if they are at home) or hospital consultant (if they are in hospital), using the referral form.
