Dementia Friendly Community

DF

Did you know?

Sheffield was one of the first cities in the country committed to being a Dementia Friendly Community.

A dementia-friendly community is where cities, towns, villages and local businesses and organisations support people to live well with dementia, helping them remain independent for longer.  By 2015 the aim is to have at least 20 cities, towns and villages working together as dementia-friendly communities. New Website for Dementia Carers

A new website has been launched to offer support and advice to people caring for those with dementia.

Dementia carers can sometimes find it a challenge to stay positive, manage frustrations, take breaks, stay healthy, engage professionals, tell friends and family, engage them too, cope with changes to their relationships, live well and support their loved one, and get the sleep that is needed.

Users will are able to choose from a "well researched topic list to see carers talk about what helps them" and "find links to other material and local activities."

Visit www.dementiacarer.net to see more.

Join the alliance!

Organisations across Sheffield are being encouraged to sign up to a new alliance and make a difference to local people living with dementia.

Sheffield Dementia Action Alliance is made up of local organisations committed to improving the quality of life for all people with dementia and their carers. Each member organisation has created an action plan outlining improvements they will make to support people affected by dementia.

Kath Horner, health improvement principal with Sheffield City Council, said: “Many organisations have employees or customers affected by dementia and many others provide services used by people with dementia.  We can all make a difference and take steps to change and improve our practice and influence the support society can offer people living with dementia and their carers.”
