Sheffield residents can still get support this Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday

Sheffield residents can still get support this Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday
01 June 2022

NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is encouraging the public to choose the right service if they are ill this extended bank holiday weekend.

GP practices and other urgent care services have remained open throughout the pandemic, but health services across Sheffield are extremely busy.

That’s why it’s more important than ever before to choose the right service for you and your needs, to ensure you get seen as quickly as possible and to free up urgent and emergency care services for those who need it the most.

There are lots of urgent care services available in Sheffield, you may not always need to go to A&E or to see a GP during the busy bank holiday period.

Your local pharmacist can help with a wide range of minor illness and ailments, including insect bites and stings, without booking an appointment. Most pharmacies have a quiet area where you can speak in private, and many are open during the evenings and weekends. You can see a full list of pharmacy opening hours on our website.

Sheffield pharmacies can even support with emergency contraception. Primary Care Sheffield’s approved pharmacies offer numerous contraceptives including free condoms and the emergency coil. This service is usually for 14–25-year-olds only. However, due to pandemic, this currently applies to women of all ages. A full list of these approved pharmacies can be found on our website here.

Walk-in services treat minor illnesses and injuries that do not need a visit to A&E. The Broad Lane walk in centre is open from 8am until 10pm every day, including bank holidays and weekends, and sees people of all ages without an appointment.

Many people go to the Accident and Emergency Department at our Sheffield hospitals with minor injuries when they could usually be treated much more quickly at the Minor Injuries Unit.

The Minor Injuries Unit, at the Royal Hallamshire hospital is open from 8am until 8pm every day, including bank holidays and weekends, and provides treatment for adults with less serious injuries.

Dr Zak McMurray, Sheffield GP and Medical Director at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “I’m sure we’ll all be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this bank holiday, but you never know when you’ll need access to urgent care.

“There are lots of urgent care services available in Sheffield, you may not always need to go to A&E or to see a GP. If you’re unsure what service to use, call 111 or use https://111.nhs.uk/, who can advise appropriately.

“Clinicians, such as nurses, doctors, pharmacists and paramedics now play an important role in NHS 111. In fact, over 50% of people who call 111 speak to someone in one of these roles.

“It’s important to reach out this bank holiday, and look after not just your physical, but mental wellbeing as well. If you need to talk to someone for advice or support, there are lots of different helplines available to you.

“Brilliant services like Sheffield Rethink Helpline are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The team can offer advice to anyone struggling with their mental health over the bank holiday weekend. You can call them on 0808 801 0440. Find other mental health and wellbeing services available this weekend here.”

Vaccines are the best protection we have against dangerous viruses like COVID. With COVID-19 still circulating, it is more important than ever that people have their vaccination. Having your jab will help to reduce pressure on the NHS and social care staff who may be dealing with COVID-19.

If you haven’t had a covid vaccination yet, it’s not too late. If you didn’t want it before and you’ve changed your mind, please come forward this weekend.

For more information on urgent care services, and the best option for you and your family, visit our Urgent Care website.

A full list of where you can get your COVID-19 vaccination every day by simply walking in is also available here.
