Over 90% of people most vulnerable from covid now vaccinated

Over 90% of people aged over 70 years old in Sheffield are now fully vaccinated from covid-19.

Figures from NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) show that 65,368 or 92% of people aged over 70 years old have now had both doses of covid-19 vaccine.

This news is welcome as lockdown restrictions continue to ease and people spend more time with loved ones.

Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and Covid Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “It is fantastic news that the vast majority of our over 70s are now fully vaccinated against covid-19. People in this age group are most at risk of serious complications from covid-19 so it’s really important that they are vaccinated. If you’re in this age group and haven’t had your vaccination yet, please contact your GP, ring 119 or visit www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination to get your vaccine booked in.”

Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, aged 71, who has had his second jab said: “Now I’m fully protected I feel safe to go out and carry out the face to face aspects of my job as a local MP. I’m looking forward to returning to Parliament, while still observing social distancing.

“It’s absolutely brilliant news and a huge congratulations to all GP practices, CCG and council for delivering the astonishing vaccination programme. It’s vital that younger people are now vaccinated to protect older people and reduce transmission to end the pandemic so we can return to normality.”

Freda France, aged 90, was one of the first people to have their covid vaccinations in Sheffield, she explains what being fully vaccinated means to her: “It’s been amazing to be able to have the vaccine and also to be the ‘First Lady of Shiregreen’. I’ve kept active everyday walking to the local co-op and to my favourite chip shop who have all really looked after me, I now call them all my grandsons.

“I’ve had lots of walks in the park with my family and my neighbour too. I’ve loved the last few weeks being able to go and have lunch out with more of my family and I’ve been to Morrisons on the veranda catching up and thanking all the staff who’ve looked after me throughout the pandemic - some personally have brought me gifts up. I’m now happy to be going back to church on a Sunday and I’m using the community transport Door 2 Door service. I can’t wait to be back indoors eating my lunches out again and seeing my friends like Valentine at Morrisons.”

In total over 287K people have had their first vaccine and over 142K their second in Sheffield.

Everyone aged over 40 is now eligible for a vaccine. If you’re aged 40-49 and haven’t been invited for a vaccine yet, please call 119 or book at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination. Those aged over 50 or those who have a health condition, can also call 119 or contact their GP practice.

Alun added: “Vaccines offer us the best chance of returning to normal life and relaxing lockdown restrictions for good, it’s vital we keep on vaccinating as many people as possible. It’s important to still continue to follow the government’s guidance on social distancing, even after vaccination.”

The NHS has launched the second phase of the vaccination programme vaccinating the healthier population aged 18-49. If you are in this age group you will be contacted by the NHS when you’re eligible for vaccination and will be given details about how and where to book an appointment.
