Sheffield NHS staff are raising money for charity by competing in ‘The Great NHS70 Bake Off’
As part of celebrations for the NHS’s 70th birthday this week, staff from NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) competed for the title of ‘Showstopper’ and ‘Best Bake’, with each entry then being sold to raise money for local charity, SToRMS.
Sheffield’s Howard Middleton from series four of The Great British Bake Off judged the competition along with Kate McAllister from SToRMS and CCG Accountable Officer Maddy Ruff.
Howard said: “It’s a pleasure to have been asked to be part of the NHS70 celebrations in Sheffield, and what better way to celebrate than with cake? We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to our NHS and I’m honoured to help raise money for a great charity.”
SToRMS “Strategies To Reduce Male Suicide” is a fund within the South Yorkshire Community Foundation which aims to prevent suicide in young males by facilitating widespread discussions and promoting mental wellbeing from an early age, as well as challenging harmful gender stereotypes that can prevent men from accessing help.
Kate McAllister from the charity, said: “SToRMS, also known as The Dan McAllister Foundation, was established in July 2015 after the loss of a young man to suicide who was aged just 19.
“Over the last 3 years we have worked with a range of local and national charities, businesses, schools, health organisations and sports clubs to share the principle that every person, young and old, has a role to play in effective suicide prevention strategies.”
Maddy Ruff, NHS Sheffield CCG Accountable Officer said: “It is with pleasure that the money raised from our Great NHS70 Bake Off will go to such a great cause. The NHS’s 70th birthday week is the perfect opportunity to give something back, and to thank our staff and partners - the everyday heroes – who are supporting all of us with our mental and physical health.”
