More choice and control for individuals

Integrated personal commissioning (IPC) is a new approach to joining up health, social care and other services at the level of the individual. It enables people, carers and families to control the resources available and to shape their own care. It also supports people to make the most of community resources around them and to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence.

A personal health budget gives people more control over the care they receive and more choice over how their needs are met. The detail of how the personal health budget is used is set out in the personalised care and support plan, agreed between the person, their representative, and the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).  Sheffield’s IPC programme is also building on local work that is already supporting individuals through peer support activities, social cafes and volunteering opportunities.

Personal Wheelchair Budgets are a significant example of the work the IPC team help co-ordinate. Programme Manager Chris Lomas shared their successes: “Sheffield is now a champion personal wheelchair budget site and there is enthusiasm and excitement about developing systems within the city to support this work.

“This is just a part of the 261 personal health budgets currently being delivered in Sheffield – and we plan to double that number.”
